Tumhara Sex Sex. Gandhi ka Sex Scandal?

Babban to Khallujan in Ishqiya! |
OK. Well, if you had your jaw drop and eyes pop out on
seeing the words ‘Gandhi’ and ‘Sex’ together in the same sentence, then you’re
exactly the person I want this article to be read by. The idea to write
something like this struck my mind when I saw a friend’s post on my FB newsfeed
that lashed out on Gandhi on recently discovering the man’s shady past. The
status screamed ‘HAUUUUUUUUUU!’ even though the word was not explicitly
written. If such a status had come from a right wing middle aged man, it could
had been easily ignored. But coming from a 20 year old guy grown up in Delhi
and a specimen of the ‘kewl’ generation, it became a little tough to digest. That’s
when the lines of Babban from Ishqiya struck me..”Tumhara Ishq Ishq. Humara
Pyar Sex?” So..that is how I want to put it before the GenX - Tumhara Sex Sex.
Gandhi ka Sex Scandal?
The way the modern Indian youth responds to this discovery
of Gandhi’s sexual life has always trumped me. A generation that has grown up watching
Hollywood movies and American sitcoms, and accepts Sex as a cool thing rather
than a hush-hush thing like the previous generation, gets all wide-eyed when
they discover the sex life of Gandhi. He suddenly falls from grace and becomes
a sex-crazed old man for them. His contributions to the nationalist movement that
got us freedom after 190 years of British rule are all swept under the waves of
expletives while his message to the world kicked away at once.
In the past few decades, with the advent of internet and the
cloak of anonymity that comes with it, a lot has surfaced over the man’s sex
life. And Jad Adams work Gandhi:Naked
Ambition(a book that not even half of those have read who degrade Gandhi
based on the claims made in it) turned the hitherto whispers and murmurs into
loud sounds…of disgust, mostly. But Its not Gandhi’s sex life that is the point
of discussion, but the way the youth reacts to it on its knowledge. For
whatever the truth was, one can only speculate in such matters and nothing
more. And even if all that is said about his sex life is true, what makes it so
scandalous? Especially for the youth, whose very vocabulary today is getting
limited to three words - ‘F*ck’, ‘shit’ and ‘sexy’. So much ‘sex’ in the
language, yet so little acceptance in those narrow minds!
Such opinions, instead of revealing about Mr. Gandhi, say a
lot more about us. The kind of people we are. It really exposes the levels of
hypocrisy that we are deep buried in. No matter how many Hollywood movies and
American Sitcoms we watch, no matter what brands we flaunt, deep inside we are
as conservative as we were before. Why is Gandhi’s sex life so scandalous to us
when the numerous flings and one night stands are becoming markers of uber-coolness
among the youth? Why can’t we accept Gandhi just as another individual who,
like all of us, had his own sexual needs and a private life? For God’s sake, he
was no Tiger Woods, at least!
What it is if not hypocrisy that when it comes to our sexual
lives, we label it a ‘private thing’ and move on but at the same time are so
happy to discuss a national figure’s sexual life in public in such a nonchalant
way. This self contradiction on our part is rather deplorable that unmasks our
double standards when it comes to the subject of sex even in the 21st
century.
As for Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, he was never a god and his deification was a motif of the freedom struggle that he had nothing to do about. So if knowledge of his sexual exploits shattered you, the blame is on the false beliefs that you surrounded yourself with. And besides his private life, there is so much positive that Gandhi has given to the world in terms of his message of peace, truth and non violence that definitely deserves more attention from the youth of this country than his sex life. And even if you’re appalled by the fact that the old man allegedly slept (in the Indian sense of the word, and not the ‘hollywood’ sense) naked next to young girls, it still doesn’t give you any right to deride the rest of his life. Perhaps, you need to take a leaf out of his book and appreciate the positive aspect of the man’s life instead of quetching about one single aspect.
So, all the young Khalujaan’s out there, we can surely do
better than scandalizing Gandhi’s sex life. We as
the more open minded generation are expected to accept more and more things as
normal, but by going ‘hauuuu’ over a man’s private life we are just
contributing as much as our past generations in keeping a few things as taboo.
And in the process, we’re creating a future similar to our suffocating present
for the next generations. So, maybe its time to give up the hypocrisy, broaden
our mindsets and at least, spare a man killed almost seven decades ago.
Expressed very well (y) , We are living in 21st century! still , our minds behaves like 12th century. As you said, "spare a man killed almost 7 decade back!" , but the only problem with this generation is, we can't move on with the dead of pasts. We will try and gonna search for deeds happened in the past by some famous auras' long long back and make this an "issue" that too *full of Ignorance,* People have actually lost/don’t know the REAL meaning of free mind, It will take so many years to Indians to understand it and broaden their mindsets. Which actually makes them think that; it is better not to interrupt in anyone’s life (Private), and digging out negative things without having any reasons(Even if they have problem or something else , they should keep it ro themselves, Huh) , because at the end of the day people(illogical morons) will get nothing more than "Baba ji ka Thullu" . So, it is better to do our own things and let the people do their own. Simple as that.
