Piece of advice

One small thing. I believe that's all it takes to fix something that's broken. The worst of things. Every time people tell me they are in stress and have this feeling of seeing their lives spiral out of control, I ask them to find something small about their lives that may or may not be part the problem. Just one thing. And start focusing their energies towards it. Start doing it everyday. It can be preparing tea for yourself every morning or writing 500 words everyday or watering plants. But it needs to be done everyday without fail. Do it with love. Do it with care. And that's why it's important to keep it small, for grand adventures often fizzle out after a promising beginning.

Our dark times are often marked by bad habits and are made darker when we open the door to those habits and invite them to stay over. In other words, we fail terribly at arresting the slide. That's how we inadvertently become responsible for our own descent. But the descent can be avoided if we take control of something small.

In my opinion, everything in this world and everything in our lives is connected. Every moment of our lives is an extension of our past and the future also flows from this very moment that you are reading it. And that's why when we try to fix one thing, it repairs the broken cycle of rut we seem to find ourselves caught in, albeit bit by bit.

The positivity of doing one thing well, no matter how small it is, begins to seep into our distress filled days. It raises our battered self esteem and we are suddenly no more losers in our eyes. And if we are not losers in our eyes, for how long can we remain losers in the eyes of others?

So, when the chips are down and there seems to be a mountain of chaos and confusion on your shoulders, don't try to hit back at the mountain. It's too big for that. But also don't let its gargantuan size fool you and make you give up, for like everything that's big, it's also made up of the small. Go for the small. As clichéd as it might sound, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Doing one thing religiously with the aim of getting out of the bigger rut is that single step. It will give you peace. It will give you perspective.

In time, that one thing would become so precious that it would fuel your battles against that mountain, for what is more powerful than love in this world? And that's how, in a strange strange way, the small will take care of the big. All you need to do is to take care of the small with all your heart.
